‘Thank you’. You can usually get away with merci but that’s pretty informal and obviously not
properly Bulgarian. Thank you is always the first thing I try and pick up in
any language but this word is hard for English ears on first hearing – it
sounds like the speaker has a mouth full of cotton wool. They compress the
vowels, the R tumbles and there’s the Bulgarian L pronounced as W thing. It
sounds like: ‘bwogurderea’ but spoken very fast, almost as if it’s one
syllable. Even after four years, I’m still not entirely sure that I’m saying
it right.
